So my internship came to an end last Thursday and let me tell you it was a bittersweet day. As much as I love that the end of my internship means school is starting back up (wanting to see my friends, I don't know how much I really want to start up classes again), I will miss my advisors since they were pretty cool.
Ok so let's overview. I was able to complete everything I wanted to learn. The last day I made a few phone calls to victims. Thankfully most of them I reached their voicemails but there was one where I had to talk to one of the victims. Our conversations in a nutshell was telling her what we could offer her and seeing if she needed any help. She said she didn't need any but I reassured that if she wanted to still make a claim she up until a year to do it. That is how most of the phone calls will go at least when I was in the office. I remembered a lot of police codes for violent crimes that I probably won't ever forget they are so engrained into my head.
What did I wish I knew?
Honestly, I think I know everything I wanted to. I do wish that I was able to go to a preliminary hearing and see how those went so I guess that's what I wish I knew; the procedure of a preliminary hearing. Unfortunately, I was never around for one and the ones that I were I wasn't allowed to go to.
To wrap this up, I really enjoyed this internship overall. As much fun as I had and as interesting as I found it, I realized that I don't want to go into that field of law. I couldn't handle some of the cases that I would have to approve. Some of them are extremely heartbreaking and you have to keep emotions out of it and I don't think I could be able to keep those two apart. So with that I put my internship to a close.

What I Wish I Knew
Hey guys!
Can't believe my summer internship has almost come to an end. I'm sure I'm not the only one that is in absolute shock that summer has just flown by...and I am sad to see my internship winding down. I have really exciting news - I have been offered a full time position in the marketing department of my current company - Cork and Platter. I am beyond thrilled knowing that upon my graduation in December I will have the opportunity to learn and grow, while staying involved with Cork and Platter. I am so thankful for the awesome experiences that I have had with this internship, and I couldn't be prouder of the work my boss and I have accomplished. We took on a lot of really exciting projects, and I feel that I've grown quite a bit through those trials. It's certainly been a summer of growth!
As for what I wish I knew at the start of my internship...I am taking a bit of a different approach. I wish I knew a few things - such as: wordpress isn't the best platform to build a user friendly website, that teaching yourself to code isn't as hard as it sounds, and that if I just trust my ability to perform, I will be just fine! I spent a bit of time, it feels, worrying that I wasn't doing enough. I have always had a hard time 'turning it off' and going about my normal life, without focusing on what I should be doing for school, work, internships etc. I wish that I hadn't spent any time at all worrying about how I was performing in my internship, and just trusting my gut. While I do believe its always important to remember to push yourself, I do know that sometimes it's best to just trust yourself and enjoy the experience. I always push myself to do my best, so I wish I had never wasted any time worrying about making my boss proud! Towards the end of my internship my boss sat me down and told me she's loved having me, and that she is so thankful for the work I've done. I can't tell you how much that meant to me! Despite the fact that this was an unpaid internship, the idea that I made a difference in this small business, and that I've been offered a full time position on this team means more to me than any paycheck ever could!

Hey guys so thinking about my internship and what I have learned so far, there are things I wish I had known earlier. I wish I had known that in "promoting" and "building brand awareness", that was meaning I would be "selling" and "showcasing" products in a Costco or Sam's Club. This wasn't an ideal internship yet the underlying lessons and things I gained from it were one of a kind. I also wish I had known that with this internship came an incredible amount of coming out of your comfort zone, public speaking, solo days, and times where "struggles" were going to be apart of the internship in order to push and grow you.
For the next intern, I would explain what their role would be, more clearly. The message I would give is that this internship will grow you in so many ways that you won't see until the end. Working as an intern for Core will give you a peek into professional settings and solid marketing/sales/promotions techniques in the morning meetings. It will also give you an opportunity to network with several people in the business, travel, and grow into a leader. And in the end, if you can be successful in this internship, see the benefits, learn, and take something away from it, you feel so accomplished and feel that there isn't another product you can't promote or location you can't strive in. There isn't much harder things to do as an intern then to try and sell a Mop in a Costco by yourself from 11am-7pm, and be successful. But man it feels great if you can.
I believe I am still young enough and am being told things right now that I am taking advantage of. I don't wish much of things I was told when I was 13. However before high school I wish I was told to really not care what others say and become independent in myself, work, core group of friends, and my family. Something I am really glad I was told and take advantage of all the time, is to network and use people and resources to my advantage. It's not all what you know but who you know and how you can use what you know to develop a relationship with who you know, in order to get where you want to go! Thought of that on the fly. Two weeks left only!
Thanks,
AJ

What do I wish I knew?
Hi Everyone!
It's hard to blog when i'm already done with my internship! I really miss being in the classroom and teaching the kids! So, for my answer to Kristi's question, I really wish I knew in the beginning of my internship how to solve big conflicts between students. When it came to solving bigger conflicts between students, at first I would get flustered and didn't know what to do and would pass the problem on to one of the head teachers. As the summer went on, after watching the head teachers, I decided to follow their example and give it a try. It may have not gone as well as I wanted it to, but I was proud that I was able to teach the kids something new. I still have a lot to improve on, but I am no longer afraid to solve problems. I really am glad that I was able to watch exceptional teachers and follow their lead while getting their support. As for a message for the next intern, I would tell them not to be afraid of conflicts. Just think about it as another opportunity to teach the students something new and that it will get better in time. I like to see it as a learning opportunity for everyone.

What do you wish someone told you?
As you enter the concluding month of your internship, think about all that you know and do each day as part of your role. Is there anything that you have learned that you wish you had known earlier? What message would you leave for the next intern to take on the role you hold?
Also think about life. And read this linked article.

Is it August already?!
Hey all!
I don't know about you, but I cannot believe it is August already! My internship is 2/3 of the way over and we start school in exactly three weeks!
My internship however, is getting much more exciting! Now that we a month into the new fiscal year, I can now run many more expense reports for departments, close out accounts so that they represent the college's income better, and make sure everything is set for when we can start putting together year end reports.
That is the biggest thing left to do in this internship and I assume I will be doing it even after school begins. We need to be able to create many documents and spreadsheets to show the college's administration and Board of Trustee's what kind of financial position the college is in. I will be helping the Controller to make sure all these documents are accurate, precise, and professional. We will then send them to the auditors for them to review and make their judgement of how we are doing as well.
Something that we all talk about in our business classes, but something that I am actually doing in my internship! Very exciting for an accounting major like me.
Hope you are all enjoying your last few weeks of summer, I know I have many things planned to do before it ends still. See you all real soon!

A Usual Week
So last week was another usual week. It's kind of slowing down a bit because there aren't as many reports coming in. I have memorized a few more codes but other than that I haven't really learned anything new yet. I still haven't worked up the nerve to make phone calls to victims but I still have 3 more weeks so hopefully I can try to at least once. I did fill out more applications for victims and learn the process of how a victim is accepted and then what would be included in their folder. I think for the rest of my internship I really won't be doing anything different than I already have been but I am still enjoying it.
Two weeks ago I went to a meeting with the heads of the departments involved in Victim Services. We actually went over a case and what actions to take, which was pretty cool. Then we went to the forensics lab and had a presentation on how they process in a case. It was pretty eye opening and I was shell- shocked on how in detail she went about how the processing of evidence in a sexual assault case. After the presentation, we got a tour of the lab. We saw the ballistics department, drug processing department, alcohol processing department and many other departments. Overall it was pretty cool and very educational experience.
